Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island, is known for its beaches tucked into coves and its expansive coral reefs rich with marine life. Willemstad, has pastel-colored colonial architecture, floating Queen Emma Bridge and the sand-floored, 17th-century Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue. The population of Curaçao is 157,538 with the capital being Willemstad.
Curaçao has a high solar potential and set a renewable energy mix target of 50% by 2035. Presently Curaçao’s energy mix is comprised of 33% renewable energy on the public grid. Its electrical demand peaks at 130MW and its electricity prices are high relative to the rest of the Caribbean.
Solar energy generation presents an opportunity to achieve Curaçao’s energy goals, lower the cost of electricity, reduce its carbon footprint and reduce its annual dependence on about 126,896,000 liters of imported oil for electricity alone.
